Frequently Asked Questions
What is a ceramic coating?
Ceramic coatings stem from protective coatings for industrial machinery and equipment
These coatings were used to extend the life of machinery by protecting it from acidic/caustic compounds, and abrasion.
This same base technology was adapted for automotive paint, and chemically bond to the paint, rather than sitting on top of it like a wax or sealant would.
What does a ceramic coating do?
Keep your vehicle cleaner for longer, which means less washing, no waxing/sealing. Leaves you with a freshly detailed look after every basic wash.
UV protection to prevent degradation/oxidation from sun exposure.
Chemical protection: so bug guts, bird poop, and road solvents will not etch into your paint.
Coatings also provide mild resistance to light abrasion – like from unsafe wash techniques, but do not protect against scratches or rock chips.
In short, it’s much stronger protection than a modern sealant (wax), saves you time, and saves you money.
Do I need a ceramic coating?
No.
Every car needs some form of protection for the paint to maintain its gloss, shine, and to prevent clear coat failure for as long as possible.
Whether that protection is from a sealant, an old school weekly wax, polymers, or a ceramic coating is up to you.
A coating just solves the issue for years instead of weeks, or months, keeps the paint cleaner longer, and significantly reduces the need for decontamination (detailing).
Do coatings require maintenance?
No.
Coatings are meant to save you time and money, not add another chore.
Many consumer grade coatings require “recharging” every 6-12 months via a sealant, but in actuality these are just poor coatings that need a sealant to protect it in order to hit the stated longevity of 2 years.
Yes, taking extra care of your coating will dramatically extend its lifespan, however it’s not necessary and is antithetical to the purpose of a coating.
